Rachael Pickles -Fine Artist

Within my work I am exploring the expanded field of painting and the trans disciplinary  boundaries of painting and sculpture. I use materials such as plaster  to explore scale and colour. Most of my work is of 3D form and range from around 10 cm to over 1 .5 m. The process for this work to some may seem simple but I have to work quickly and catch the materials at the right time to get the result I want for my work.I like the materials I use because I don't need to use lots of different materials to get the outcome I want 

I am currently working with plaster as a main material and creating a vast collection of sculptures exploring the sculptural process to create a range of spherical sculptures that are in some ways otherworldly. 

 Using mainly primary colours red, blue and yellow within the work. I am also starting to explore the secondary colours within more recent works theses colours are anchored within different sections of the work whether it be the sphere like shape or the form that is created on the top the colours range from more neon bright colours to marbled effect and more pastel like colours depending how the colour reacts reacts with the forms.

My work started off as more 2d but once i started experimenting with the 3d forms i knew this is where i needed to carry on my work and carry on exploring the difference in scale and colour as a result of this the work progressed and has became less controlled and more free in the way that its not confined to  a frame or canvas. 

 

The goals for the work is to push the scale as far as I can to be able to make it so large that the work looks over you like a building. I am also hoping to move the work from an inside sculpture to an outside sculpture by changing the materials slightly which hopefully someday in the future I will be able to accomplish.
